An automatic full-immersion bean-to-cup brewer. Add beans and water, pick a drink and a time, and the machine grinds, steeps for about five minutes, lifts the grounds clear and has seven hundred fifty millilitres of coffee ready.
A sealed filter cup holds the grounds in full immersion, then lifts them clear when the steep ends. A stepper and lead screw do the lifting and a quarter turn releases the puck. The pull is borrowed from the Weber BIRD. Taking the grounds out of the water stops extraction, so the carafe can sit without over-steeping. A little residual moisture at the lift is accepted in exchange for a simpler seal.
One knob sets a drink, one of seven strengths and a time. Turn to change, press to confirm, hold to go back. The round screen sits in a custom bezel.
Every join is a screw and one screwdriver separates every material. Sixteen parts in five material groups, with only stainless steel, glass and silicone touching the coffee.
The 1:1 mock-up pairs a real French press carafe and plunger with 3D printed everything else, so grip and pour were tested with real mass.
